man,
i was in a really good mood earlier today and last night, but now i’m kinda bummed. that show was like a definitive end to the lair, and i don’t think a lot of people realized how much the lair and everything around it impacted me. seeing the band play one last time, seeing that newcomb and reptar and milano are gonna be gone, that ian’s changed alot, that this summer won’t be the same, i dunno, it’s just really kind of sad. i dunno.

thestranger1602 asked: So I just randomly discovered your blog while searching for a song by Violent Femmes and I just wanted to let you know that I really like it. :) Also, while looking at your page I saw that you had tried to get into Pink Floyd. And you really should because they are seriously amazing. You should try your library, they might have all of their albums. I just rented them and downloaded them to iTunes. But honestly, they're worth forking out the money to buy their music.

Yeah, I actually just set aside my negativity toward them for making their music so hard to listen to and added them to my to-check-out list like yesterday, haha. I’ve listened to most of The Wall and some of Dark Side of the Moon but I’m pumped do check out the rest sometime soon. And thanks for the compliment! :)

1: 10 favorite artists.

I’ll try to only do two songs for each band. I’ve only recently really gotten into bands, though, and I have a lot of music that I haven’t listened to enough to call them my favorites but I really, really like so this list won’t be very accurate of what I actually listen to. Kinda makes me look like I just started listening to music about a month ago or something. Anyway, in no order:

  • Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst is a brilliant lyricist and so many of his songs hit me so strongly. See Something Vague and Lover I Don’t Have to Love, but all of Fevers and Mirrors is definitely worth listening to)
  • The Violent Femmes (These guys seriously did not put out a bad song. They’ve got this vibe that no one else [except maybe The Unicorns] have ever really had and they’re so jammy and fun. The vinyl I desire most is their self-titled. Check out Add It Up and Kiss Off)
  • Chad VanGaalen (This guy meshes electronic and acoustic like no one else ever has. He’s like some sort of electro post folk phenomena or something, I don’t even know. Give Bones of Man and Clinically Dead a listen. But seriously, get on Grooveshark or Spotify or whatever you do and listen to both Soft Airplane and Infiniheart by him in their entirities. I can almost guarantee you’ll find a new artist you like)
  • Jimi Hendrix (Duh. Star Spangled Banner live at Woodstock and Castles Made of Sand)
  • The Morning Benders (This band pulls at my heartstrings. Excuses (Yours Truly Session) and Dreams)
  • Arctic Monkeys (These guys just make good songs. I saw them live at Lollapalooza and they weren’t that great, but I still have confidence in them. It was like 120 degrees, seriously, and they were playing all new stuff at the time. Listen to From the Ritz to the Rubble and Mardy Bum)
  • The Flaming Lips (Why wouldn’t anyone like these guys? They’re experimental, influential, artistic, creative, great guys, everything about it’s amazing. Do You Realize and Slow Nerve Action)
  • Smashing Pumpkins (Almost didn’t make it, but I can’t deny the Pumpkins a place on the list. The kings of chill early alt rock. 1979 and Luna)
  • The Brian Jonestown Massacre (These guys are more recent. I’ve been really stupid about music throughout my life and I’m finally trying to be more cultured and their early stuff blows me away. For some great early psych, check out Anemone and She Made Me)
  • The Beatles (Everyone’s top 10 has to have them! Everything’s great, I’ll just throw out Happiness is a Warm Gun and I Want You (She’s So Heavy), songs from their prog rock days)

6: Overrated artists.

I don’t really want to just attack bands, so I’m just gonna name a couple of bands that are well-received and state that I personally just don’t enjoy them as much as other people do, which is okay. I’m even gonna include a song by each of them that I like, because I feel like that’s nice to do. This list includes The Arcade Fire (Can’t Let Go of You off of their demo), Mumford & Sons (Liar), tune-yards [not gonna be bothered to type that all silly] (Sunlight) and M83 (Midnight Days) from last year. It’s totally fine if anyone likes them, but I’m just personally not a huge fan.

12: Bands I’ve seen live.

Tool, Arctic Monkeys, the Killers, Animal Collective, Atmosphere, Eyedea & Abilities, Rise Against, Lykke Li, Kid Cudi, Asher Roth, the Spill Canvas, Andrew Bird, MSTRKRFT, Deadmau5, Crookers, the Glitch Mob and maybe Bassnectar, haha. I’ve never had money to go to shows and I live in Iowa so :/ and I didn’t see a lotttt of the bands I should have when I went to Lolla. But I’m going to NXNE in Toronto this year so that’ll be tight.

16: Last Album I bought.

Hmm. I’m not really sure, cause I buy a lot of random stuff from Goodwill and whatnot. I just got the Violent Femmes #3 tape from 18th street, which is I guess my favorite latest purchase. I’m going down to Iowa City soon to hopefully get some tight vinyls though, so that’ll be cool.

First off, i doubt she even knows this picture exists. That is her boyfriend, and they have been dating for a solid chunk of time, so if SOMEONE ELSE posts a picture of her sitting on his lap i don’t think she has done anything wrong.

Second off, What is the…

listen to my man milano. this town sucks and like 75% of everyone here can eat a dick. also i’m gonna delete the picture so it doesn’t get around because that’s nobody’s business. can’t believe someone took the time to screenshot that fb post, go through her pics, download the pic and put this all together. everybody everywhere sucks.

           Tiger got to hunt,
            Bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder, "Why, why, why?"
            Tiger got to sleep,
            Bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.

11: What bands my parents got me into.

My dad is pretty literate musically. When I was a kid I’d play video games on the computer and play his library on shuffle in the background, saving songs that I liked as I went. I had hundreds by the time I was done. From him I got

  • Desaparecidos (Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes’ first band, lo-fi garage punk)
  • Smashing Pumpkins (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is one of the greatest albums of the nineties in my opinion)
  • Tool (Maynard is a great composer and lyricist. Tool also puts on an amazing live show. Check out Lateralus and Maynard’s other project A Perfect Circle)
  • Chad VanGaalen (He meshes acoustic and electric amazingly. Listen to Infiniheart in its entirety. Great album)

Yeah. My mom doesn’t listen to much music but a little Janis Joplin will always make me think of her.

13: Bands I want to see live.

Here’s three bands that are still touring:

  • The Flaming Lips (I try not to be snobbish, but if there’s anyone else ever, ever, that you have on your top band to see live, you’re wrong and you need to replace them with The Lips)
  • MGMT (I just feel like this would be a really cool show to go to)
  • Why? (This is totally out of left field, but these guys seem like they would just be a total blast to see live. They do a ton different in their live sets and they’d just be really fun if everyone was into it)
